Choosing office desk 2

You’ll have to live with your choice of office desk for some time… so choose wisely.

Choosing the right desk is one of the most important decisions you can make. You spend so much time at work that you need to make certain you are comfortable and organised enough to the job well.

A poorly-designed desk can cause pain and discomfort and lead to you becoming easily distracted from your work. A lack of suitable storage can mean overstretching to reach important documents or time lost as you hunt for necessary files.

Here are five top tips that will help you to decide on the perfect desk for your working needs.

5 top tips for choosing the perfect office desk

1 – Think about layout or space

Don’t be tempted to buy a compact desk because it won’t take up as much room. Compact desks are great for when you’re solely doing computer work, but they don’t have much surface space.

Getting a desk with more surface space might benefit your work as you can create a layout that works best for you. If you need stationery, in-trays etc, ensure that you won’t be cramped.

2 – Consider ergonomics

Ergonomics is the study of how people interact with their working environment and has given us some great, practical ways to reduce pain and discomfort at the desk.

Firstly, make sure that your chair and desk suit each other. Armrests on your chair might seem like a nice feature until you find out that they prevent you from getting close enough to the desk.

You should be able to reach everything you need on your desk without twisting, pulling or overstretching. This way you’ll minimise chances of back and shoulder strain.

3 – What do you do at your desk?

Everyone’s work activity tends to be unique to them – do you do a combination of computer and paper work? If so, you’re going to need a desk to accommodate both. Choose a desk that has plenty of space for monitor, keyboard and mouse, perhaps with storage that allows you to keep your PC tower out of the way.

If you only write at your desk, you need to ensure that it’s comfortable enough for you to do so without slouching.

4 – Check height and size

Sit comfortably in your chair, with your feet flat on the floor and your knees bent and 90 degrees. Drop your arms to your sides and lift your forearms until your elbows are also bent at 90degrees. The height of your wrists is the perfect height for your desk.

This means that you will be able to comfortably write or type without strain.

5 – Consider the style of desk

Do you need something simple and practical that won’t take up too much space? Consider a bench desk. Do you need lots of room for computer work as well as document management? A wave or ergonomic design might suit you better.

Always keep in mind the type of tasks you’ll be performing when choosing a desk.
